Hoodoo, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Utah

Red rock country in the American Southwest is extraordinary. The sandstone formations that have formed here are other worldly. As I often leave unscheduled time on my photography trips, this image is the product of blind exploratory wandering. I pulled off the highway, grabbed my backpack and started hiking up a wash. I was quite pleased to find this area of sculpted sandstone and loved the way this image came together. The striated blue stone in the foreground leads the eye into the sculpted red hoodoo formation in the background. Beautiful.
